What Are Parameters in AI Models? Meaning, 7B Explained and Examples

Satvik ParamkushamUpdated October 5, 20265 min read

Definition

Parameters are the internal numbers (weights and biases) that an AI model learns during training. They store everything the model has picked up from data, and the parameter count, such as 7 billion, is a rough measure of model size.

In Hindi: Parameters woh numbers hain jo AI model training ke dauraan seekhta hai, inhi mein model ka saara 'gyaan' store hota hai.

What are parameters in AI models?

Parameters in AI models are the adjustable numbers inside a neural network that the model tunes during training so its predictions get better.

Think of a neural network as millions or billions of tiny knobs. Each connection between two artificial neurons has a weight (how strongly one signal affects the next), and many neurons also have a bias (a small offset). Together, weights and biases are the parameters.

When training starts, these numbers are random. The model sees an example, makes a guess, measures how wrong it was, and nudges every parameter slightly in the direction that reduces the error. After billions of such nudges over the training data, the parameters hold patterns about grammar, facts, code and reasoning styles.

Parameters are the model's memory of its training, written in numbers instead of words.

A simple Indian example: a model that predicts a flat's rent in Pune might learn one weight for area, one for distance from the metro and one for floor number. A large language model works on the same idea, just with billions of weights instead of three.

What does 7 billion parameters mean in an LLM?

A 7 billion parameter LLM is a model whose network contains about 7,000,000,000 learned numbers, which is what the "7B" in a model name stands for.

You will see this naming everywhere: 7B, 13B, 70B and so on. For example, Meta's first LLaMA paper released models at 7B, 13B, 33B and 65B parameters, and OpenAI's GPT-3 paper described a 175B model.

The count tells you two practical things:

  • How big the file is. More parameters means more numbers to store and load.
  • How much compute each answer needs. During inference, the model does maths with its parameters for every token it generates.

Some newer models report two numbers: total parameters and active parameters. In a mixture of experts model, only part of the network runs for each token, so the active count is much smaller than the total. Many leading closed models do not publish their parameter counts at all, so treat online guesses with caution.

Parameters vs hyperparameters: what is the difference?

Parameters are learned by the model from data, while hyperparameters are settings chosen by a human before or during training and generation.

PointParametersHyperparameters
Who sets themThe training algorithmThe engineer or researcher
WhenLearned during trainingFixed before training or generation
How manyMillions to trillionsUsually a few dozen
ExamplesWeights, biases, embedding valuesLearning rate, batch size, number of epochs, number of layers
Saved in model fileYesUsually stored as config, not learned

Settings you use at generation time, like temperature or top-p, are sometimes called sampling or inference parameters. They are not learned either, so in exam answers it is safer to group them with hyperparameters and settings, not with weights.

Do more parameters mean a better AI model?

More parameters often help, but they do not guarantee a better model, because data quality, training length and design matter just as much.

Researchers found that many large models were undertrained for their size. The LLaMA paper reported that its 13B model beat the much larger 175B GPT-3 on most of the benchmarks it tested, largely because it was trained on far more text. Newer small models keep closing the gap with older giants for the same reason.

Bigger models also cost more to run, are slower and can still hallucinate. A huge model trained on poor data can also memorise noise, which links to overfitting.

When students ask me which model to pick, I tell them to look at benchmarks for your actual task, speed and price before you look at the parameter count. A 7B model that runs on your laptop can beat a giant model you cannot afford to call.

How much memory does a model with billions of parameters need?

A rough rule is that each parameter needs about 2 bytes at 16-bit precision, so a 7B model needs roughly 14 GB just to hold its weights.

memory for weights = number of parameters x bytes per parameter
7B at 16-bit = 7 billion x 2 bytes = about 14 GB
7B at 8-bit = 7 billion x 1 byte = about 7 GB
7B at 4-bit = 7 billion x 0.5 byte = about 3.5 GB

Treat these as lower limits. Real usage is higher because the model also needs working memory for your prompt and its context window, plus software overhead. Training needs several times more memory than running, because it also stores gradients and optimiser states.

The trick of storing each parameter in fewer bits is called quantization, and it is the main reason people can run 7B and 8B models on ordinary laptops today.

Frequently asked questions

What are parameters in AI in simple words?

Parameters are the numbers an AI model learns from data during training. They decide how the model turns an input into an output, much like the settings a student slowly adjusts while practising maths problems.

What is a billion parameters in AI?

A billion parameter model has about 1,000,000,000 learned weights and biases. Model names like 7B or 70B tell you the count in billions. Bigger counts usually mean more capability, but also more memory and compute to run.

What are active parameters in an LLM?

Active parameters are the parameters actually used to process each token. In mixture of experts models, a router sends each token to only a few expert blocks, so the active count is much smaller than the total parameter count.

Is temperature a parameter in AI?

Temperature is often called a parameter in API docs, but it is not learned during training. It is a generation setting you choose, so technically it behaves like a hyperparameter, not like a model weight.

Are parameters and weights the same thing?

Weights are the biggest part of a model's parameters, so people often use the words interchangeably. Strictly speaking, parameters also include biases and other learned values such as embeddings and normalisation scales.
