Satvik ParamkushamUpdated October 5, 202610 min read

Quick answer

The most useful AI for HR courses teach you to draft job descriptions, support screening, build structured interview kits, write policies and answer employee FAQs, while keeping hiring fair and candidate data safe. A free six-week path at 15 to 20 minutes a day covers these skills without coding, using your own HR tasks for practice.

A hiring manager wants five openings filled by month end, the leave policy needs updating before the audit, the onboarding deck is two years old, and the same ten questions about reimbursements keep landing in your inbox. HR work is full of writing, structuring and answering, which is exactly where AI assistants save time.

HR also carries a special responsibility. Hiring decisions change people's lives, and candidate and employee data is personal and sensitive. So this free, six-week path teaches both halves: how to use AI for real HR tasks, and how to keep it fair, transparent and lawful. It suits HR executives, recruiters, HRBPs, L&D teams and HR students preparing for placements. Each week links to short lessons in our AI concepts library and ends with one practice task from everyday HR work.

What AI skills do HR professionals need?

HR professionals need to use AI for drafting, structuring and answering, and to judge where AI must not make or quietly shape decisions about people. Technical skills such as building models are not required.

The core skills:

  1. AI basics. Know what generative AI is, and why it can produce confident but wrong answers.
  2. Prompting for HR documents. Job descriptions, offer letter templates, policies and FAQs in your company's tone and format.
  3. Structured hiring support. Using AI to build competency-based interview kits and scoring rubrics, which make interviews fairer, not to rank people on its own.
  4. Answering from your own policies. How tools answer questions from your handbook, a technique called RAG, and why answers must cite the policy.
  5. Fairness and data protection. Understanding AI bias, consent and what candidate data may be shared with which tool.
In HR, AI should help you treat people more consistently, never help you treat them less carefully.

How long does it take HR professionals to learn AI?

Most HR professionals can use AI confidently for daily tasks in about six weeks at 15 to 20 minutes a day. Evaluating or implementing AI hiring software across a company takes longer and needs input from legal, IT and leadership.

A weekly rhythm that fits around hiring cycles:

  • Monday to Thursday: one short lesson, then one prompt on a live task such as a JD, an email or a policy question.
  • Friday: the week's practice task, about 30 minutes.
  • Month end or appraisal season: pause new lessons and use your saved prompts on the workload.

Keep a shared prompt library with your team. Five well-tested prompts for JDs, interview kits and FAQs save more time than fifty you used once.

Are there free AI for HR courses with certificates?

Yes, though few are both free and certified. Most HR-specific AI courses let you learn free and charge for the certificate. Here is an honest comparison:

  1. Week 1

    AI basics for HR

Goal: Explain what AI assistants are, what they can do for HR and why their answers need checking.

    • What Is Artificial Intelligence? A Simple Explanation for Beginners and Students
    • Generative AI Explained Simply: Meaning, How It Works and Real Examples
    • LLM in AI Explained: Large Language Models, How They Work and Where They Fail
    • AI Hallucination Explained: Why AI Makes Things Up and How to Catch It

Practice: Ask an AI assistant five questions about Indian HR basics, such as notice period norms, gratuity eligibility or maternity leave. Check each answer against the official law or your company policy and note where it was wrong or outdated.

  2. Week 2

    Job descriptions and job posts

Goal: Write prompts that turn a hiring manager's notes into an accurate, inclusive job description and a short job post.

    • Prompt Engineering Explained in Simple Words, With Before and After Examples
    • Few-Shot Prompting
    • Zero-Shot Prompting

Practice: Take the notes for a real opening. Ask AI for a JD with responsibilities, must-have and nice-to-have skills, then ask it to flag biased or exclusionary wording, such as unnecessary age limits or gendered terms. Compare with your current JD.

  3. Week 3

    Screening support without hidden bias

Goal: Understand how AI matches resumes to roles and use it only to summarise against clear, job-related criteria you set.

    • Embeddings in AI Explained: How Machines Turn Meaning Into Numbers
    • Semantic Search
    • /ai-projects/resume-screener

Practice: Write five job-related screening criteria for one role. Using three anonymised sample resumes (no names, photos, age or address), ask AI to summarise evidence for each criterion. Check whether its summaries are accurate and whether you would reach the same view.

  4. Week 4

    Interview kits and structured interviews

Goal: Build competency-based interview questions, follow-up probes and scoring rubrics that every interviewer uses the same way.

    • Chain-of-Thought Prompting
    • Temperature
    • AI HR Interview Questions and AI Video Interviews: How to Answer Them

Practice: For one role, ask AI for six behavioural questions mapped to the JD's competencies, each with a 1 to 5 scoring guide describing weak, average and strong answers. Remove anything that is not job-related and share it with one hiring manager for feedback.

  5. Week 5

    Policies, onboarding and employee FAQs

Goal: Draft clear policies and an FAQ that answers employee questions from your own handbook, with references to the source clause.

    • RAG in AI Explained Simply: How Retrieval-Augmented Generation Works
    • Context Window in AI Explained: How Much an LLM Can Remember at Once
    • Vector Databases Explained for Beginners: How AI Searches by Meaning

Practice: Paste your leave or reimbursement policy (with no employee data) and ask AI to write 10 employee FAQs, each citing the policy clause. Check every answer, then ask it for a simpler version for new joiners.

  6. Week 6

Fairness, candidate data and AI governance

Goal: Set team rules for AI use in hiring and people decisions, including data handling, human review and transparency with candidates.

    • AI Bias
    • Training Data
    • AI Guardrails

Practice: Write a one-page AI-use guideline for your HR team: approved tools, what data may never be entered, which decisions always need a human, and how candidates are told when AI is used. Review it with your manager or legal team.

How is AI used in HR day to day?

HR teams use AI most for writing, structuring information and answering repeated questions across the employee lifecycle. Practical examples:

  • Talent acquisition: JDs, job posts for different platforms, outreach messages to passive candidates, interview scheduling emails and rejection letters that are kind and clear.
  • Interviews: competency-based question banks, scoring rubrics, and summaries of interviewer notes in a standard format.
  • Onboarding: first-week plans, welcome emails, buddy guides and onboarding checklists by role.
  • Policies and helpdesk: policy drafts, plain-language summaries and FAQ bots that answer from approved documents.
  • L&D: training outlines, quiz questions and role-play scenarios for managers.
  • Engagement and exits: grouping open-ended survey comments into themes and drafting exit interview summaries, using anonymised data.

A prompt you can adapt:

Act as an HR business partner at a 300-person Indian IT services company. Rewrite the policy below as 8 FAQs for employees in plain English. Quote the clause number for each answer, and say "Please check with HR" where the policy is unclear.

Recruiters who also run outreach may find our path for sales professionals useful for messaging, and HR leads running projects can use the project managers path.

Can AI make hiring unfair?

Yes. AI can make hiring unfair if it learns from past decisions that were biased, or if it uses signals that stand in for gender, age, caste, religion, disability or background. Amazon's experimental recruiting tool, widely reported in 2018, was dropped after it was found to favour men because it learned from years of male-dominated hiring data.

How to keep AI-assisted hiring fair:

  1. Decide criteria first. Write job-related criteria before any tool sees a resume, and make the AI explain its summary against them.
  2. Remove identifying details such as name, photo, age, gender, address and college where they are not job-relevant.
  3. Never let AI reject alone. A trained person reviews every rejection, especially for candidates the tool scored low.
  4. Test regularly. Compare shortlisting rates across groups and investigate gaps.
  5. Be transparent. Tell candidates when AI is used and offer a human contact.
If you cannot explain why a candidate was rejected, you should not be rejecting them.

Can HR put candidate or employee data into AI tools?

Only into tools your company has approved for that data, and only as much as the task needs. Resumes, salaries, performance ratings, medical certificates, Aadhaar and PAN details, and disciplinary records are personal data, and some are highly sensitive.

Simple rules:

  • Use placeholders like [Employee], [CTC] or [Manager] when drafting letters in public tools, and fill details in later.
  • Stick to purpose. Data collected for hiring should be used for hiring, not for unrelated analysis.
  • Follow consent and retention rules. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 sets duties on consent, purpose and data protection, so involve your legal or compliance team when rolling out any AI tool on people data.
  • Check vendor terms. Before adopting an AI recruiting tool, ask where data is stored, whether it is used to train the vendor's models and how candidates can request deletion.

What mistakes do HR teams make with AI?

The biggest mistake is letting AI make or silently steer people decisions without human review. Other common ones:

  1. Copy-pasting AI policies. Generic policies may not match Indian labour law, your state's rules or your company's practice.
  2. Over-polished, impersonal letters. Candidates notice. Edit for warmth and accuracy.
  3. Trusting AI on legal points. Always confirm statutory details, such as gratuity, PF or leave entitlements, with official sources or your legal team.
  4. Ignoring candidate experience. Chatbots that cannot hand over to a human frustrate applicants.

If you are preparing for HR interviews yourself, expect questions on how you use AI responsibly. Our guide to HR round AI questions covers common ones.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best AI for HR courses?

The best AI for HR courses are practical and cover fairness and data protection, not just tools. Start with a free path like this one to apply AI to JDs, interview kits and policies, then add a short structured course such as Generative AI for HR Professionals on Coursera if you want a certificate.

Are there free AI courses for HR professionals?

Yes. This six-week path is free, and several online HR-focused AI courses can be audited free, with a paid certificate. General free courses such as Elements of AI also help with basics. Confirm current pricing and certificate rules on each official page before you enrol.

Can AI screen resumes fairly?

Only with safeguards. AI can summarise resumes against job-related criteria, but it can repeat bias from past hiring data. Remove identifying details, set criteria first, have a person review every rejection and compare shortlisting rates across groups to catch unfair patterns early.

Will AI replace HR professionals?

No. AI can draft documents, answer routine questions and organise data, but HR work depends on judgement, trust, negotiation and handling sensitive situations. HR professionals who use AI well will spend less time on paperwork and more on people, culture and decisions.

Do HR professionals need coding to use AI?

No. HR professionals use AI through chat assistants and AI features inside HR software, which needs clear prompts and good judgement. Basic data skills help in HR analytics, but coding is only needed if you plan to build your own tools or work in HR technology roles.
